How Fire Damage Can Lead to Water Damage | SERVPRO of Los Angeles

First responders arriving to a serious house file. Servpro logo top center with text underneath. When the first responders finish their job, ours begins.

When a fire occurs, many are concerned with the potential of catastrophic fire damage. But did you know that water damage can occur as a result of fire damage?

  • Fire damages the integrity of a building's electrical system, resulting in leaks or ruptured pipes
  • A fire will remove most or all insulation from walls which in turn causes condensation on interior surfaces like windows and ceilings. Condensation on windows and ceilings may drip down onto furniture and floors.
  • Firefighting efforts can cause water damage to a structure during the firefighting process. Even if fire sprinkler systems are working correctly, they are designed to extinguish a fire - not to prevent water from entering your home.

At SERVPRO, we work diligently to help prevent water damage and to respond quickly when it occurs. We offer premier water damage fire cleanup and fire restoration services in the region. Contact SERVPRO of Park la Brea today to learn more. Servicing all of Los Angeles, CA and more.

Prevent a Kitchen Fire Catastrophe Poster Follow These Tips to Prevent a Kitchen Fire Catastrophe

Kitchen fires can be a common and scary reality for many, and they often occur unexpectedly and spread rapidly

According to the National Fire Protection Association, fire departments respond to over 170,000 fires each year that involve cooking equipment, including ovens, stoves, grills, and barbecues. Prevent the unthinkable with these tips:

  • Make sure your appliances are in good working order. This includes ovens, burners, and any other kitchen areas.
  • Never leave cooking food unattended. If you do, it could lead to the fire spreading or getting out of your control before you notice and turn it off.
  • Make sure kitchen elements are turned off if you need to leave a room for any reason, even if it's only for a few moments.
  • Never throw water on a grease fire. This will only spread the flames and make them worse!
  • Have a fire escape plan in place, especially if you have children or pets. With any fire, it's important to be able to get out of the house safely and quickly.

If you experience a kitchen fire and need water or fire damage cleanup services, contact the team at SERVPRO today. We will help you restore your home with the fire damage and water cleanup services you can trust.

Los Angeles Fire Damage Team. Are You Prepared?

6/25/2020 (Permalink)

A home burning in a fire with statistics about numbers of fires in the United States. These statistics are alarming. How do you prevent fire damage in your home?

In 2018, Fire Departments in the United States responded to 1.3million fires resulting in $25.6B in property damage loss. Based on research studies completed by the NFPA, otherwise known as the National Fire Protection Association, while the volume of fires decreases annually, the number of fatalities that occur as a result of fire damage remains the same. On average, there is a death every 2 hours and 24 minutes from civilian fire damage (NFPA, 2018). These deaths are preventable and this is a number we need to change. Here are a few things you can do to be better prepared for fire damage:

  1. Understand Fire Risk and Safety - We all know not to run into an active fire, but did you know that keeping doors closed during a fire can help prevent the spread of the fire?
  2. Test Your Smoke Alarms - The Fire Department recommends testing your units at least once a year, however, in some cases, this should be practiced on a quarterly basis.
  3. Check Wiring to Appliances - Ensuring that appliances and electrical equipment are properly wired and stored can assist in preventing unexpected fire damages.
  4. Have an Action Plan - Having a rehearsed evacuation plan is a great start. Also consider creating an ‘emergency backpack’ with emergency supplies in the event of an emergency.

You and your family’s safety should always be the number one priority in any emergency planning. Check out these other fire damage tips that can help in the event of an emergency. The SERVPRO of Park la Brea team is here to help you through any size fire in the Los Angeles area

Fire Restoration Prevention with our ERP Program

6/19/2020 (Permalink)

Our SERVPRO ERP to prevent the need for fire restoration services. Prevent the need for fire restoration services with an ERP!

In each commercial building, there is typically an evacuation plan in place to assist in the event of an emergency. These plans, which are typically rehearsed once or twice a year, are intended to better prepare the tenants of the building for an unwanted disaster. However, most of these plans fail to identify gas shut off valves, water shut off valves, and other crucial locations which can greatly assist in the event of an emergency. Check out our tips to stay safe before we arrive!

The building can now be even more prepared for an emergency with the SERVPRO Emergency Readiness Program! This program includes:

  • A no-cost assessment of your facility.
  • A concise Profile Document that contains only the critical information needed in the event of an emergency.
  • A guide to help you get back into your building following a disaster.
  • Establishes your local SERVPRO Franchise Professional as your disaster mitigation and restoration provider.
  • Identification of the line of command for authorizing work to begin.
  • Provides facility details such as shut-off valve locations, priority areas, and priority contact information.

With the ERP in place, minimizing the spread of damage is now more possible than ever. Research suggests that 50% of businesses that experience fire damage or water damage never reopen, the ERP can prevent that!

How Easily Can Fire Damage Spread?

6/10/2020 (Permalink)

A home in need of fire restoration services with a SERVPRO promise to always be available 24/7, 365. The fire restoration process only begins once your family is safe. Your health and safety is our priority!

We have all drove past a burnt down building and thought to ourselves “I hope that never happens to me.” However, a substantial Fire Damage can happen in the blink of an eye. In a video titled “How Fast Does a Fire Spread”, the Department of Commerce creates a scenario in which a dried out pine tree is set on fire to examine the length of time it takes for the fire to grow throughout the home.

In this case, within 20 seconds, the sofa immediately next to the tree is set on fire. Within 35 seconds, the room becomes so full of smoke that it becomes almost impossible to see the damage being caused. When seeing the damage from this perspective, it is clear that an entire home can be destroyed within minutes. As a result, here are a few helpful hints to consider to keep your home and family safe to prevent the need for fire damage restoration.

  • Install smoke alarms on every level of your home prioritizing bedrooms and other sleeping areas.
  • Test your smoke alarms on a monthly basis.
  • Establish a fire escape plan and rehearse it with your family. Or consider creating an ERP for your business (more info on our blog )
  • Be prepared to evacuate in the event of an emergency.

There are just a few of many fire damage tips that you can do to keep the fires away! Our crews work hard to perform fire restoration after a building fire, however, The Los Angeles Fire Department works harder to keep our community safe 24/7, 365. Thank you to our local firefighters for all that they do!

Fire Damage Restoration. Who to call?

6/13/2019 (Permalink)

It can be alarming and scary to watch a smoldering fire burst into a dangerous inferno. When a fire spreads outdoors (like a forest fire), everyone understands that trees and air aid the speed and progression of the fire. In your home, it can be more difficult to understand. Highly trained technicians for water damage restoration needs are available 24/7. Water damage of any sizes are welcomed!

One of the main causes of spreading fire in a home is age – or rather, the lack of age. Newly constructed homes often contain brand new furnishings. These new construction materials combined with new furniture and fixtures tend to burn quickly because newer building materials are simply more flammable.

Another reason home fire spread so quickly is because of the natural tendency to panic. Opening doors can provide oxygen that unintentionally feeds the fire. Running through the house trying to find loved ones or retrieve sentimental possessions is a panicked move. Don’t do it. It can be hard to keep your wits about you in a moment of panic, but it can help save the lives of the people you love. Water damage, water cleanup, or any water remediation needs, SERVPRO of Park la Brea is here. Water restoration and water damages are our specialty! Water damage restoration isn’t easy, but SERVPRO is here to help! SERVPRO of Park la Brea is the water damage team to call!

Equip your home with fire extinguishers, fire escape routes, and other safety measures. In the unfortunate event of a fire, you’ll be able to escape as quickly as possible and lead your family to safety. Here at the SERVPRO of Park la Brea, we are always willing and ready to help install any of these fire prevention tools in your home!

Fire Damage Restoration in Los Angeles can happen one day. Be Prepared!

5/31/2019 (Permalink)

Home fires, no matter what caused them, can be extremely scary. But keep calm and learn what to do if a fire happens in your home. This is how to get everyone out safely and as soon as possible. Fire damage is not something that should be taken lightly, and fire cleanup and fire remediation teams should be contacted immediately.

The very first thing you need to do is alert everyone, but make sure not to panic. If there’s a kitchen fire, or if an electrical failure caused a fire, alert everyone as soon as you see it or sense the smoke. These are the first steps of serious fire damage. SERVPRO is here!

Once everyone is aware, follow the escape plan you had when you learned how to be prepared for a fire. It’s extremely important you know the best route out of the house and guide everyone out as quickly as possible. Safety is always our number one priority with any fire damage and through every fire cleanup. SERVPRO will help.

While you’re heading out, remember not to go back or delay to look for material things, go to the door and get out. In case you can’t walk, or can’t see due to the smoke damage, crawl to the floor and move like that until you reach the door. Smoke and Soot can make the conditions of the home very unsafe during fire damage. SERVPRO is the way to go!

Again, if by any chances you’re caught on fire, remember to immediately stop, drop and roll to stop your clothes from burning and getting bad burn injuries on your body. Once you’re out, count everyone to make sure you are all safe. Los Angeles homes, typically older homes, are more likely to suffer from more serious fire damage. As a result, it is important to contact a fire remediation team immediately for fire clean up!

Last, but not least, call 911 as soon as you have the chance. Don’t try to investigate the fire or go back in for personal belongings for any reason. Once the fire department has marked the area safe to enter, call SERVPRO of Park la Brea for a quote and to treat the fire damage!

Fire Damage Restoration in Los Angeles. Are you prepared?

5/31/2019 (Permalink)

Although preventing a fire should always be a priority, sometimes accidents happen and we still need to be prepared to run away from the fire, the ashes and the smoke. Lucky, preparing for such an event is easier than you think.

  1. Have Smoke alarms set. These alarms can detect fire pretty quickly and go off the second they sense smoke, potentially saving your life. Install them all around the house, not just near the kitchen.
  2. Have a fire extinguisher ready at all times to disperse smoke and put down the fire, especially near the kitchen area, since most accidents like these are kitchen fires.
  3. Make sure you have an escape route. During the fires, the ashes and smoke can be pretty deceiving, so make sure you know your way out.
  4. Learn how to stop, drop, and roll. This simple technique can not only stop your clothes from burning, but it can stop the fire overall and avoid a bad burn.
Learn how to move by crawling on the floor and avoiding all the smoke floating around. This particular one can potentially gain you more time and help you escape quickly.

Being prepared for a fire is all about planning ahead and controlling yourself in the situation. Fire and smoke can be terrifying but being prepared and knowing what to do could save your life.

Fire Damage Restoration in Los Angeles in any home!

5/31/2019 (Permalink)

First and foremost, fires can be extremely dangerous and scary if they are not dealt with promptly. In most cases, fires are caused by simple mistakes. Left the stove top on? Forgot the lasagna in the oven? Didn't burn out that candle? These are all, simply ways in which a fire can start. Fire damage in the Los Angeles area, considering our tight community, is very impactful. Fire cleanup, fire damage, and fire remediation specialists are here to help at SERVPRO of Park la Brea

For starters, when it comes to preventing kitchen fires, never leave your kitchen unattended when cooking. Keep stoves with hot oil in the back of the kitchen at all times, and never leave without turning them off. Same goes for when using the oven, never leave it alone. Fire damage is unforgivable! But the fire cleanup team is here to help! Soot clean up, smoke removal, and more!

When it comes to the rest of the house, follow these simple tips to prevent fires in your home:

  1. Do not leave any flammables near the kitchen. Nor sprays, oils, cleaning utensils. Absolutely nothing that can burn quickly.
  2. Keep an eye for old outlets extenders or old chargers. They can heat up and explode, causing an electrical failure at home, and even a huge fire.
  3. Never, ever, extinguish oil fire with water! This can cause a reaction and the fire would just spread, burning everything nearby.
  4. Pay attention to weird smokes or odd odors, these can tell you when something in your house is burning up and you can stop it before it turns to a whole house fire.

Causes of Home Fires

6/14/2018 (Permalink)

A small candle fire caused all of this damage!

Whether we liked it or not, home fires are very common, and the truth is, they can be caused by anything. It’s not only about a hot stove left unattended, or an overheated oven anymore, there are many things in your home that can potentially cause a fire.

  1. Kitchen Fires: Probably the most common ones, kitchen fires happen all over the country. Hot stoves, hot cooking oil, heated ovens and flammable objects near a fire, all can turn into a horrible accident.
  2. Electric Fires: Leaving your electronics plugged in overnight can potentially overheat the outlet and cause an electric failure that turns into a house fire.
  3. Candles/Matches: Lighting up a fire or a match in the wrong place can also start a fire, especially if you leave candles on flammable surfaces, it can lead to the fire spreading and burning everything on its path.

As you can see, a lot of things can burn and start a fire. However, it is very easy to prevent these kinds of scenarios. There are many precautionary measures to make sure this does not happen. Call SERVPRO of Park la Brea to find out how!

Fire? Smoke? Soot? Oh my.

6/14/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO uses our high-efficiency air scrubber to remove airborne particles that are invisible to the human eye!

Small fires don’t stop when you extinguish them away. Sure, the fire is gone, but the smoke, heat, and ashes can cause just as many problems to your house, turning a small fire into major damages.

For example, small fires can leave big marks on your walls, floors, and ceilings due to the heat coming from the flames. These types of marks are usually black and are extremely hard to remove.

Not only that, the smoke and ashes from a small fire can damage your electronics. Actually, smoke can get into electronic devices, causing them to malfunction and even cause the circuits to fail.

More so, the heat itself can melt objects that the fire didn’t get to touch. This includes electric outlets, electronics, clothes… Whatever was near the small fire at the moment it happened. Not to mention the smoke and burnt odor that can stay in your house for days, weeks, or months.

Asmall fire can be the cause of major damages around your house, even after the fire itself has been put away. Because of this, it is important to have your property checked, even if there is not substantial visual damage, by a professional!

It can be alarming and scary to watch a smoldering fire burst into a dangerous inferno. When a fire spreads outdoors (like a forest fire), everyone understands that trees and air aid the speed and progression of the fire. In your home, it can be more difficult to understand.

One of the main causes of spreading fire in a home is age – or rather, the lack of age. Newly constructed homes often contain brand new furnishings. These new construction materials combined with new furniture and fixtures tend to burn quickly because newer building materials are simply more flammable.

Another reason home fires spread so quickly is because of the natural tendency to panic. Opening doors can provide oxygen that unintentionally feeds the fire. Running through the house trying to find loved ones or retrieve sentimental possessions is a panicked move. Don’t do it. It can be hard to keep your wits about you in a moment of panic, but it can help save the lives of the people you love.

2 Ways Fire Affects The Life Of Your Family

Family is always most important in any scenario. Protect your family always!

A house fire can be a traumatic experience. It can have consequences far beyond the material losses of the fire. Keep reading to see three other ways a fire can affect your family and the signs you should look for.

  1. Separation Anxiety
Stress following a fire can manifest as an unwillingness to be separated from each other even for brief periods of time. If your spouse is reluctant to return to work or your children balk at going back to school after a fire, they may be experiencing separation anxiety.
  2. Sorrow and Loss                                   A house fire can cause your family to lose some items that no amount of insurance can replace. Family photos, family heirlooms and treasured trinkets cannot be replicated. Coping with these losses can lead to initial bouts of sadness and regret.

If you or your family experience either of these follow-up effects in the aftermath of a fire, consider seeking professional help. A therapist can help your family recover and thrive again. You’ve hired one set of pros to restore your home, now employ another kind of pro to restore your family. Remind the people you love that escaping and surviving the fire is the most important thing. At the SERVPRO of Park la Brea, we understand how traumatic this experience can be and will always be here to help in whichever ways we can.
